For those of you dealing with students reading YA materials, check  out SYNC YA Literature into Your Earphones, get the toolkit and share with your students for summer reading. They'll even text the kids a reminder when the program starts in June!! Now there's service.                                                                                                Katie

Get information HERE about the Salute to Our Military Parade, scheduled for May 12th. Think about how you can participate, if only by making a donation towards the food for thousands of returning service members AND their families at Alaskaland after the parade.                                                                                                        Katie

Check out this information on Poem-in-your-pocket Day, which is coming up soon!!   Years ago I made a bulletin board for April with a colorful paper apron, sporting a pocket of course, which I kept filled with poems for the students to take. It needed constant refilling.                                                                                  Katie

Check out this Bookmaking With Kids website with instructions for a little bookmaking project for students with National Haiku Day in mind. Sure it looks great for showcasing some original poetry but it has  a lot of other applications as well. I'm adding it to my Scoop-It site and will house that under the Bookmaking tab of our new LiveBinder full of year end activities for those days when you have more time with the students.

Afraid this wasn't on my radar.  :-(

I'll be watching for it next year....and anyhow, as they mention on the National Drop Everything And Read website, EVERY day should really be a D.E.A.R.  day.
If you haven't discovered the Resource page at this site, check it out for lots of ideas for next year and even extensions if you celebrated for this year.             Katie

I think elementary folks will enjoy this new approach on book care.              Katie

This Huffington Post article by Brad Meltzer titled The Unsung Heroes in Our Schools, is a great testiment to the value you all add to the lives of our students. A bit closer to home, this article from the Frontiersman in Matsu is written by teacher, Emily Forstner. It is lovely to have the support of a fellow educator as well.         Katie

Those of you in control of iPads being used in English classes and/or with students studying poetry might want to look over this collection of Poetry Apps, posted on the Mashable Entertainment blog, to see what is suitable for your age group. And if you find the time to read the comments on the post, Nikhil Khandekar's, as well as the author's followup, are very interesting.                                                                                     Katie

Local author Cherie Stihler just shared this discovery with me.....illustrator Tom Lichtenstein (of Duck Rabbit; Shark vs Train and What Are You Grumpy About? among others) has a wonderful page of downloadable activities related to his books. Just click  on the link in the left hand column for Activity Guides. Maybe you'll want to look at the other links as  well!!

So the Hunger Games series has made it to the TOP 10 Banned Books List. This Slate.com article gives a little more detail about the list and some of the titles that have moved up or down or off the list.                                                                                Katie
