Some of you may have read about this website in Jacque Petersen's weekly post. I spent a little time looking around in the site and I think abookandahug.com would be a great link from your home pages. The sites author/owner is a children's bookseller/librarian/parent/grandparent all rolled into one. Her page on Books for Boys has some new tips and categories worth investigating and she is developing a Books for Girls page. She also has a page of videos from her TV program, Books Alive, where she interviews authors. And I really liked the number of "If you like xxxxxx" links for those patrons who have read an entire series and need suggestions as to where to go next. My only complaint was in Firefox, on my screen, some of the text spilled over from the white background to a darker background and was a little difficult to read. Check it out for yourself though! Yes, 36 Pages, that is the number of pages in most picture books and this is a blog all about picture books, acknowledging how hard it is to limit oneself to such limited space and celebrating those creative souls who do it well. http://36pages.com/ I haven't read this yet, in fact I don't own a copy...yet, but it is at the top of my purchase list. Book List, Library Journal and the Amazon customer reviews all give it high praise. We'll be getting a copy for he LMS Professional collection but it looks like something you might want for your teachers AND parents. http://www.amazon.com/Book-Whisperer-Awakening-Inner-Reader/dp/0470372273/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1281978014&sr=1-1 From Melissa Rickey at UAF Dept of Education Here is a forwarded email from poet Janet Wong Dear Melissa, Darcy, and Barbara: I am very happy to announce that a free downloadable Advanced Reading Copy (ARC) of my next book, ME AND ROLLY MALOO, is now available at www.charlesbridge.com/arc. Username: Charlesbridge Password: ARC Please take a look, and if you like it, share it with your colleagues, students, and friends! This is the book that I featured in one of the small sessions that Barbara attended, and it is also the book that I will focus on in my IRA luncheon talk in Chicago. A note about the title: Jenna Lee is the one who tells the story in this book. I describe her as "ME" in the title because so many of us, particularly children, define ourselves in terms of the people around us. Rather than taking the lead in forming our own identities and making our own decisions, we are shaped by peer pressure. In this book, Jenna becomes a cheater because Rolly wants her to cheat. I'm hoping that this story will encourage lively classroom discussions about popularity, identity, being a leader, and doing the right thing. I think this book could make a successful read-aloud (with the graphic novel-like elements providing a natural opportunity for readers' theater). On a related subject: Charlesbridge is doing a drawing, with the prize being a Skype school visit from me. You can find details on their website, about halfway down the home page: www.charlesbridge.com. Please feel free to spread the word about this. Last month I plunged into the world of Skype and did a half-dozen Skype sessions with students, and it was fun for everyone, I think, because it had a "special event" feeling despite the fact that it was pretty easy to do. I'd love to "visit" more students this way! Thanks! All best, Janet janet@janetwong.com |
